One Step Higher for Matteo Mutti, the Cadet Boys’ Singles Champion in Croatia
Occupying the fifth seeded position the draw, Italy’s Matteo Mutti emerged as the somewhat unexpected winner of the Cadet Boys’ Singles title at the Croatia Junior and Cadet Open in Varazdin on Sunday 21st September.
Furthermore, he added to his medal haul in Varazdin.
One day earlier he had secured silver in the Cadet Boys’ Team event in partnership with Carlo Rossi.
Early Departure for Top Seed
Arguably, a surprise success for the Italian and it was against most worthy opposition.
Matteo Mutti accounted for Austria’s Maciej Kolodziejczyk at the quarter-final stage (11-2, 7-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7), a player very much in form. One round earlier, the Austrian had beaten Russia’s Anton Kotov, the top seed and the one player who had remained unbeaten throughout the whole of the Cadet Boys’ Team event.
Maciej Kolodziejczyk emerged successful in five games (11-2, 7-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7).
A testing hurdle overcome; at the semi-final stage Matteo Mutti overcame Slovenia’s Peter Hribar, the no.12 seed (11-7, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6); before claiming the title at the final expense of Russia’s Ilya Isakov, the no.2 seed (8-11, 13-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-3).
Important for Italy
“I'm pleased with this trophy, it proves that training every day and the hard work is not in vain”, said Matteo Mutti. “I think the win is also important for table tennis in Italy.”
